The Theewaterskloof Municipality officially launched its annual festive safety campaign today with a multi-stakeholder integrated roadblock. This initiative marks the start of the festive season and school holidays, focusing on road safety awareness, compliance checks, and encouraging travellers to explore the unique attractions of Theewaterskloof.
The Acting Executive Mayor, Alderman Cynthia Clayton, addressed law enforcement officers, traffic officials, police, firefighters, emergency responders, councillors, tourism partners, municipal officials, and other stakeholders at the event, thanking them for their dedication.
“Today’s roadblock is about more than enforcement; it is about education, vigilance, and ensuring that everyone who travels through our beautiful region does so safely. I deeply appreciate the efforts of our law enforcement and essential workers, who sacrifice time with their families to ensure the safety of ours,” said Clayton.
She emphasised the importance of collaboration in keeping the roads and communities safe during the busy holiday season.
The acting Mayor also highlighted the role of tourism partners in showcasing the region’s attractions.
“Theewaterskloof is not just a gateway to iconic destinations like Cape Town or the Garden Route; it is a destination in its own right. From our world-class wine farms and delightful restaurants to vibrant markets and thrill seeking activities, we invite travellers to stop, explore, and experience all that our region has to offer,” she said.
The acting Mayor issued a strong appeal to all road users to prioritise safety.
“Too many lives are tragically lost on our roads during the festive season. Families start the new year in mourning due to accidents that could have been avoided. I urge everyone to be vigilant, patient, and cautious. If you are drinking, do not drive or walk along busy roads. Always look out for others and ensure you are fit to be on the road.”
She also reminded residents and visitors of the dangers of swimming in unsupervised areas.
“Whether you are cooling off in a nearby stream or enjoying a day at the beach, safety must always come first. Accidents can happen anywhere, so please take every precaution to protect yourselves and your loved ones.”
She also extended her gratitude to all essential workers who will be on duty over the festive season.
“You are the unsung heroes of this season. Your commitment ensures that our roads, beaches, and communities remain safe for all to enjoy. On behalf of the Municipality, thank you for your service.”
The festive safety launch serves as a call to action for all road users, travellers, and community members to make this a season of joy and safety.
