Genadendal (Afrikaans for “Valley of Grace”) is a small town located in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, South Africa, renowned for its spiritual and cultural heritage. The German Moravian missionary Georg Schmidt founded what would become southern Africa’s earliest mission station in 1738 at this valley that was then named Baviaanskloof (Baboon Valley).
The church taught the Khoi people of the area to read, write, do farming and craftsmen, and the mission gradually grew into a fully-developed settlement. In 1838, Genadendal became the site of the very first college dedicated to teacher education in South Africa, marking a key landmark in the nation’s history of education.
Now the town is home to heritage cottages, an old church with one of South Africa’s oldest pipe-organs, a museum, a culture-rich community and printing-press roots.
