Rusty Gate Challenge
50km | 21km | 12km
The Rusty Gate Challenge on 12 October is an exciting trail running event set against the stunning backdrop of Rusty Gate Mountain Retreat and surrounding farms. This challenging event features three race options:
50km with 2 180m elevation gain:
This ultra-marathon starts with a 3km climb up to the crest of Rusty Gate Pass, followed by a rollercoaster of forestry roads and trails down to Theewaterskloof Dam. After skirting the dam, runners face a 13km climb to the race’s high point at 1011m above sea level, including a spectacular 4km loop in and out of a previously inaccessible gorge. The route then descends to Boskloof Dam, ascends Rusty Gate Pass, and culminates with the Rusty Gate Gorge Trail’s steep switchbacks before reaching the finish line.
21km with 1 120m elevation gain:
The route begins with a sharp 2km climb up Rusty Gate Pass, looping through scenic farmlands and special hiking trails to the 8km high point. A thrilling descent to Boskloof Dam follows, then a climb back up Rusty Gate Pass. The final leg features a 9km descent to Elandskloof Gorge and a 2km climb back out to the finish.
12km with 820m elevation gain:
This route starts with a descent into a narrow gorge toward Elandskloof Farm, followed by a zigzag climb. Runners will then skirt the Elandskloof River gorge, leading back to Rusty Gate Dam. The course includes a 2km climb to the upper farm dam, finishing with a 3km stretch of single track and farm road running back to the finish.
Participants can expect a mix of steep climbs, rapid descents, and scenic paths, making each race a memorable adventure.
