Discover Elgin

The Overberg’s Orchard & Cool-Climate Wine Valley

Elgin is a suburb in the Overberg area of the Western Cape, which lies roughly 70 km southeast of Cape Town, just beyond the Hottentots Holland Mountains.

The entire region was first known as “Koffee Kraal” – the place where animals were unloaded and allowed to graze (an outspan) on the old Cape Town–Caledon route between the Bot and Palmiet Rivers.

Eventually, the valley became a prime agricultural region, first as a major deciduous fruit-growing area (especially apples) and later as a cool-climate wine region.

Today, Elgin Valley holds the title of being South Africa’s largest apple-producing area, and has successfully marketed its cool-climate wines thanks to its unique altitude and climate.
