EASTER ROAD SAFETY STRENGTHENED THROUGH MULTI-AGENCY ROADBLOCK

Theewaterskloof Municipality today conducted a joint roadblock operation in collaboration with Law Enforcement, Traffic Services, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Fire Services and the South African Police Service (SAPS), as part of an integrated approach to enhance safety ahead of the busy Easter period.
This coordinated initiative brings together all critical role-players to ensure that residents and visitors can travel safely during one of the busiest times on our roads.
The Easter weekend is traditionally associated with increased traffic volumes, and with it, a heightened risk of road incidents.
The operation was attended by municipal and political leadership, including the acting Municipal Manager GW Hermanus and the Deputy Mayor Alderman Cynthia Clayton, who delivered a message to officers and shared a deeply personal perspective drawn from decades of service in the nursing field.
“This is a big weekend on our roads. I served as a nurse for 52 years and have trauma experience, so I have seen first-hand the devastating impact of reckless and negligent driving. I urge all motorists not to drink and drive and to ensure that everyone in the vehicle wears a seatbelt. Even in my own family, I teach my great-grandchild that wearing a seatbelt is essential,” the Deputy Mayor said.
“I have sat with families who have lost loved ones due to reckless driving. It is something that stays with you. I want to thank all our officers and emergency personnel and assure you of my full support for the important work you are doing this weekend.”
The programme commenced with an opening prayer by a local priest, who called for protection, strength and guidance for all officers and first responders deployed over the Easter period.
Director of Community Services, Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, also addressed those in attendance, reaffirming the municipality’s operational readiness to manage traffic flow, respond to emergencies and support community safety throughout the holiday period.
Director Solomons-Johannes further highlighted the importance of the broader emergency response network, including provincial EMS and medical personnel:
“This integrated approach is critical. We also extend our sincere gratitude to our provincial EMS and medical staff, who respond to incidents we could not prevent, because one death is one too many. Thank you, thank you very much for the exceptional work and dedication to keeping everyone safe. We appreciate each and everyone here for your service, especially when you are away from your own families during this special time of year.”
Theewaterskloof Municipality urges all road users to act responsibly, adhere to traffic regulations, and exercise patience and caution while travelling.
Let us work together to make this Easter a safe one for all.
